Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky, tweeted that Airbnb and Airbnb.org are working with their hosts to house up to 100,000 refugees fleeing from Ukraine... for free!
If this is the first time you've heard about Airbnb.org, you might be surprised to know that for the last 9.5 years, Airbnb has worked with non-profits organizations to provide housing to people in crisis.
The original idea came from a Brooklyn Airbnb host, Shell. Shell contacted Airbnb and asked if she could offer her place for free to people who had to evacuate Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. This gave birth to their Open Homes program and later a Disaster Response tool that has since aided in:
Housing relief workers and people impacted by natural disasters:
Nepal Earthquake (2015)
Hurricane Harvey (2017)
Hurricane Irma (2017)
Hurricane Maria (2017)
Mexico City Earthquake (2017)
Camp and Woosley Fires (2018)
Australia Bushfires (2020)
Hosting People affected by a mass shooting (Pulse Nightclub 2016)
Providing Make-a-Wish family' housing (One wish a day 2017)
Housing healthcare and frontline workers on the front line of the pandemic (2020)
Providing temporary housing for 20,000 Afghan refugees (2021)
Airbnb.org is the next chapter. Their Mission: To unlock the power of sharing space, resources, and support in times of need.
Airbnb.org has provided over 100,000 people short term housing in times of crisis. And now Ukraine...
This is a great example of the power of community and maximizing resources.
Can't wait to see how Airbnb.org evolves.
